"Her Birthday" "His Birthday"

foreverliberal:

I feel like every time I go somewhere it’s like a sociological expedition.

So I went to Hallmark today to get Christmas cards, and I was wandering around the store. There were two distinct sections for birthday cards on one entire wall — “Her Birthday” and “His Birthday”, which can be seen above.

It’s obvious that the sections are made up of completely different colors. The women’s section is made up of soft pastel colors, with many pink cards, while the men’s section has very dark and bold colors, like black, brown, and blue.

It continues to amaze me how if you really look around, you will see how much gender distinction there is. And it’s based on nothing but stupid societal norms that aren’t based on facts at all. Pink used to be for boys (it was related to red, a strong and bold color) while blue was used for girls (it was related to the Virgin Mary and was considered to be “delicate and dainty”) until the 1940’s, which shows how fast what’s considered “normal” can change.

What’s even more pathetic is that the “women’s colors” are always chosen for their soft and delicateness, while the “men’s colors” are chosen for being strong and tough. I for one am tired of being labeled as a delicate little flower because I have a vagina and boobs, but that’s a whole different discussion on traditional gender roles (which we should all know are bullshit).

I can’t wait until the day where the only difference between “his” and “her” sections like this are the pronouns.
